The simple answer is no, they are not quiet. But, are they quieter than a rooster? Maybe!

Often, folks starting out thinking that hens are quiet. Little do they know that hens love to sing a song. Yep, your beautiful ladies are little divas that belt out their egg song at the top of their lungs leaving you wondering what all the noise is about. The egg song is sung with pride and great reverence once an egg is laid. She is belting out to the world that she's laid the most beautiful egg and everyone should bask in her glory! Ok, that's a bit dramatic but it's partly true! Hens will sing their song because they are proud of their egg. Not every hen will do it but most of mine do. Click HERE to hear the egg song.
My girls will sing that song for awhile. I'm not talking a minute or two, I'm talking like 10-15 minutes this will go on. It usually happens in the morning, likely around the time that my neighbors are thinking they should just get up because there's no sleeping in with the chickens singing their song. Don't feel sorry for them. I pay them off with eggs!
I've heard from other chicken keepers that when there is no rooster, a dominant hen or the one at the top of the pecking order will act like a rooster. In fact, she'll even crow like one too! She will be the gal that warns of danger and attempt to fight off predators if it comes down to it. Interesting for sure! We have all hens but have yet to hear one crow.
With the egg song and then potential crowing, I'm thinking that hens can be just as loud as roosters. In questioning random people about a rooster crow and an egg song, most don't even know what the egg song is but they definitely know a rooster crow. Maybe folks only know the rooster crow so they naturally think roosters are louder when in fact it's kind of all the same. Interesting!
